Officials emphasised that fuel shipments into the country are continuing as scheduled, with sufficient reserves in place to meet demand in the near term.

The prime minister called for calm, warning that unnecessary stockpiling risks creating artificial shortages and disrupting supply chains that are otherwise functioning.

The appeal comes as a surge in consumer demand has led to long queues at petrol stations and intermittent shortages in some regional areas.

Authorities have made clear that these disruptions are not driven by a lack of overall fuel, but by sudden spikes in purchasing behaviour that outpace delivery schedules.

Australia maintains several weeks of fuel reserves across petrol, diesel, and aviation fuel, providing a buffer against global supply shocks.

However, the country’s heavy reliance on imported refined fuel means it remains sensitive to international developments, particularly ongoing tensions affecting major shipping routes such as the Strait of Hormuz.

Energy officials have reinforced that contractual supply lines remain intact, with deliveries expected to continue in the coming weeks.

They have also warned that panic buying risks worsening the situation by placing undue pressure on transport and storage systems, especially in rural and regional communities where resupply can take longer.

The government has already taken steps to ease pressure on the system, including releasing portions of national reserves, adjusting fuel standards to increase available volumes, and coordinating closely with industry participants to prioritise essential services.

At the same time, regulators are monitoring pricing behaviour and distribution practices to ensure fair access and prevent opportunistic conduct during the period of heightened demand.
