Australia’s Prime Minister, Anthony Albanese, has announced the establishment of a wide-ranging royal commission into antisemitism as pressure mounted nationwide after the December fourteenth mass shooting at a Jewish Hanukkah event on Sydney’s Bondi Beach that left fifteen people dead and many more wounded.

The inquiry, Australia’s most powerful form of government-commissioned investigation, will not only examine the tragic events of the attack but also address the broader nature, prevalence and drivers of antisemitism in Australia and propose recommendations to strengthen law enforcement, social cohesion and community safety.

At a press conference in Canberra, Albanese said the royal commission will be led by retired High Court judge Virginia Bell and is due to deliver its final report by December fourteenth, two thousand twenty-six, exactly one year after the Bondi massacre.

The scope of the commission will include investigations into how antisemitic hatred and extremism have manifested domestically, how Australian institutions responded to warning signs and how future threats can be prevented.

The commission has the power to summon witnesses and compel the production of documents.

The decision followed weeks of public and political pressure from victims’ families, Jewish and community groups across the country, business leaders and senior political figures calling for a federal-level inquiry with robust authority.

Advocates emphasized that a royal commission was necessary to address systemic issues that contribute to antisemitism and to provide answers on security and intelligence arrangements prior to the massacre.

While the government previously initiated an independent review into law enforcement and national security agencies, that review will now be incorporated into the broader royal commission with an interim report expected by April.

Opposition voices, business leaders and university heads have welcomed the establishment of the royal commission but also urged transparency and accountability, including calls for senior security officials to testify publicly.

The inquiry marks a significant and formal response by the Australian government to one of the nation’s deadliest acts of violence and may shape future policies on hate-crime prevention, social cohesion and national security policies in the years ahead.
