Australia’s battery recycling sector is projected to expand into a multi-billion-dollar industry by 2050, driven by surging demand for electric vehicles, renewable energy storage, and the recovery of critical minerals.

A newly released industry analysis indicates that the battery materials recovery sector currently contributes around 2.1 billion Australian dollars to the national economy and supports approximately 19,450 jobs.

With accelerating battery usage across transport, manufacturing, and energy systems, the sector could grow to 6.9 billion Australian dollars and employ more than 34,600 people by mid-century.

The projected expansion is closely linked to a sharp increase in end-of-life lithium batteries, particularly from electric vehicles.

Analysts estimate that volumes of used lithium batteries could rise dramatically over the coming decades, creating significant opportunities for recycling and materials recovery.

This process—often described as “urban mining”—involves extracting valuable materials such as lithium, nickel, and cobalt from spent batteries and reintroducing them into the supply chain.

By doing so, Australia can reduce reliance on imported raw materials while strengthening its domestic industrial capacity.

Industry leaders highlight that Australia already possesses strong foundations for growth, including established recycling capabilities for lead batteries, a rich resource base, and advanced research expertise.

With appropriate policy settings, the country is seen as well positioned to become a global leader in battery recycling and circular economy practices.

The sector’s expansion is also expected to play a broader role in supporting national priorities such as energy security, advanced manufacturing, and emissions reduction.

Recycling infrastructure can help address environmental risks associated with battery waste while unlocking new economic value from materials that would otherwise be discarded.

However, stakeholders emphasize that achieving this growth will require coordinated policy frameworks, including nationally consistent regulations and improved collection systems.

Industry groups have called for stronger stewardship measures to ensure sufficient supply of recyclable materials and to encourage investment in domestic processing capacity.
