Lopes already leads the Personal Ordinariate of the Chair of Saint Peter, the North American branch headquartered in Houston.

The Australian ordinariate became vacant after Archbishop Anthony Randazzo concluded his role there following his promotion to lead the Vatican’s Dicastery for Legislative Texts, one of the Holy See’s most important legal offices.

Randazzo’s transfer elevated an Australian bishop into a senior Vatican position while simultaneously creating a leadership gap inside the ordinariate system.

The ordinariates were established under Pope Benedict XVI through the 2009 apostolic constitution Anglicanorum Coetibus.
