Australia’s national online safety regulator has announced that from December 11, 2025, major social-media companies will be required to submit monthly reports outlining the number of under-16 accounts they have removed.

The new requirement follows the enactment of a law that obliges so-called “age-restricted social media platforms” to prevent Australians under 16 from holding accounts.

Under the legislation — the — social media companies must take “reasonable steps” to prevent minors under 16 from creating or maintaining accounts.

Platforms that do not comply face civil penalties that can reach up to A$49.5 million.

The law will officially be enforced from December 10, 2025, when the minimum-age rule takes effect.

The regulator, , has confirmed that it will send initial notices for account-removal data on December 11. Afterwards, monthly notices will follow for at least six months, requiring companies to provide detailed statistics on how many under-age accounts were deactivated or blocked.

This reporting obligation is part of a broader framework designed to hold platforms accountable for enforcing the minimum-age rule.

The list of platforms covered by the rule includes popular services such as , , , , , (formerly Twitter), , , and others designated under the law.

Under-16s will no longer be permitted to hold or create accounts on these platforms, regardless of parental consent.

The government and eSafety authorities argue the monthly-reporting requirement enhances transparency and ensures that platforms are held responsible for enforcing age restrictions.

It also aligns with broader efforts to protect young Australians from potential harms associated with social media, including mental-health risks, exposure to harmful content and excessive screen time.

Over the coming months, the published statistics will offer early indicators of how effectively platforms are complying — and potentially reveal the scale of underage use prior to the ban’s full implementation.
