Australian defence officials have been closely tracking the Chinese task group, which includes a frigate, a cruiser and a replenishment vessel, amid speculation about its intentions and destination as it moves through international waters in the Pacific.

Satellite imagery has revealed the flotilla’s formidable capabilities, reinforcing its ability to sustain long-range operations far from home ports.

While Australia’s government has not confirmed that any live-fire exercises are underway, Defence Minister Richard Marles acknowledged uncertainty over whether drills have occurred.

The naval task group was observed near Australia’s exclusive economic zone and has prompted careful monitoring by the Australian Defence Force.

Authorities stress that, although the vessels are being watched and their movements assessed, they have not breached territorial waters and are operating in accordance with accepted international law, which allows warships to transit through international seas.

Beijing has reiterated that its naval activities comply with international legal norms, with a Chinese foreign ministry spokesperson stating that the deployment should be understood through established legal frameworks and that questions about its purpose should be directed to relevant authorities.

The flotilla’s presence comes against a backdrop of broader Chinese maritime activity, including earlier task group movements around Australia and military drills in the Tasman Sea in 2025. Those exercises, conducted within Australia’s exclusive economic zone but outside territorial seas, were also defended by Beijing as lawful operations in international waters.

Australian and New Zealand defence forces monitored those activities and raised diplomatic concerns about the lack of prior notification.

Analysts caution that while the deployments have caused public unease, they are consistent with China’s expanding blue-water naval capabilities and its broader ambition to project power across the Indo-Pacific.
