Liberty Bell Bay Smelter Enters Limited Operations Amid Ore Supply Challenges

Liberty Bell Bay Smelter Enters Limited Operations Amid Ore Supply Challenges

Tasmania's Liberty Bell Bay faces operational cutbacks due to the loss of its main ore supplier and global price volatility.
Liberty Bell Bay, a prominent industrial employer in northern Tasmania previously known as TEMCO, has announced it will enter a period of 'limited operations' due to ongoing difficulties with ore supply.

A spokesperson indicated that the smelter lost its main ore supplier last year following Tropical Cyclone Megan, which caused significant damage to South32's GEMCO infrastructure.

This disruption has led to increased pressure on inventory levels and working capital.

In addition, global price volatility and tariffs imposed in the United States have further complicated the operation's viability.

Liberty Bell Bay employs approximately 250 full-time staff, and the company has stated there will be no forced redundancies; however, Premier Jeremy Rockliff expressed concern over the situation.

He noted that during this operational pause, around 40 staff members would be engaged in 'care and maintenance' of the facility.

The Premier conveyed that the operational pause would likely continue for the foreseeable future, affecting the majority of the workforce consisting of about 253 full-time employees and 30 contractors.

The manganese alloy smelter, located in George Town, has faced operational difficulties in the past, including a near closure in 2019 when its previous owner, South32, reviewed its operations.

The smelter was subsequently acquired by GFG Alliance in 2020, led by Sanjeev Gupta, amid concerns regarding another of the company’s assets, the Whyalla steelworks in South Australia, which is currently under administration.

In response to the operational challenges, Industry Minister Eric Abetz stated that the Tasmanian government is mobilizing support for affected workers and their families.

He emphasized the importance of ensuring the wellbeing of all employees, suppliers, and the local community impacted by the operational pause.

Jobs Tasmania has been tasked with engaging with employees to offer support services.

Federal Industry Minister Tim Ayres has called for greater transparency regarding the smelter’s operational issues and urged GFG Alliance to communicate effectively with stakeholders, including the Tasmanian government, staff, and local unions.

He announced plans to establish a rapid assessment team to analyze the commercial position of Liberty Bell Bay and provide guidance to both governments.

Opposition Leader Dean Winter expressed concerns not only for the employees but also for the broader economic implications if the smelter fails to recover.

He highlighted potential repercussions for local power prices and the Tasmanian economy due to the significant role the smelter plays in the area's industrial landscape.

Energy expert Marc White noted that Liberty Bell Bay represents about 7 percent of Tasmania's energy consumption and is among the state's largest consumers of natural gas, indicating that the future cost of gas transportation from Victoria could be influenced by the smelter's operational status.
