Tropical Cyclone Zelia has intensified into a destructive category-five system, poised to impact the Pilbara coast of Western Australia.

The cyclone, located approximately 145 kilometers north of Port Hedland, has reported wind gusts of up to 285 kilometers per hour, marking it as one of the most powerful tropical cyclones possible.

The Bureau of Meteorology indicated that the cyclone is forecasted to maintain its category-five classification as it makes landfall.

The cyclone is expected to cross the coast between Dampier and De Grey, including Port Hedland, on Friday night, leading to significant threats of flash flooding and damaging winds, with gusts reaching as high as 290 kilometers per hour.

"This is going to be a big one," stated Western Australian Premier Roger Cook.

Approximately a dozen schools, roads—including the Great Northern Highway—and major ports in the northwest region have been closed in preparation for the storm's approach.

Angus Hines from the Bureau of Meteorology commented, "That is the most powerful tropical cyclone you can get, and it is forecast to be a category five system as it crosses the coast." He further noted that the expected wind speeds are strong enough to inflict substantial damage to houses, trees, and power lines.

Residents in the town of Karratha have observed ominous weather conditions, with local resident Carrie McDowell describing the sky as "super black." She cautioned about potential flooding, recalling her experience with a category-three cyclone in 2020.

A cyclone warning is currently in effect for an area extending from Wallal Downs to Dampier, including Port Hedland and Karratha, with additional alerts extending inland to Marble Bar.

The notice emphasizes the potential threat to lives and properties as the cyclone approaches.

Additionally, a "watch and act" alert has been issued from Eighty Mile Beach to Dampier, including Karratha.

Heavy rainfall is anticipated from Wallal Downs to Wickham, covering approximately 450 kilometers, with some areas already experiencing rainfall of up to 200 millimeters.

Flood watches have been issued for the northwest region, particularly concerning the De Grey catchment and coastal rivers of the Pilbara.

Cyclone Zelia is projected to bring over 500 millimeters of rain in some locations.

Reports have indicated severe impacts, with at least one road train washed off a bridge in Marble Bar amid the storm's onset.

In anticipation of the cyclone's impact, major mining companies Rio Tinto, BHP, and Fortescue have suspended operations at Pilbara ports.

Rio Tinto stated that it is currently premature to assess the duration of the port and rail shutdowns.

In Port Hedland, local resident Chris Ward reported busy activity as residents prepare for the cyclone, stockpiling supplies and securing properties.

Airport operations have also increased, with FIFO (fly-in, fly-out) workers departing the region.

Authorities are collaborating with retailers to ensure adequate supplies are available for rural, indigenous, and isolated communities as the cyclone tracks towards the east Pilbara coast.

Additional personnel and resources are being deployed in preparation for potential flooding.

Meanwhile, the recovery efforts continue in north Queensland following significant flooding that resulted in two fatalities.

Over $100 million in state-federal grants is now available to support flood-affected primary producers and small businesses, with the Queensland government contributing $1.5 million to support charitable efforts for the victims.
