Diane Keaton, the Academy Award–winning actress known for Annie Hall and The Godfather, died on October 11, 2025, and her family has confirmed that the cause of death was pneumonia. She was 79. Her death certificate lists primary bacterial pneumonia as the immediate cause, noting no other significant contributing conditions. She was cremated on October 14.

In a statement, the Keaton family expressed deep gratitude for the outpouring of support and revealed that Keaton “loved her animals and was steadfast in her support of the unhoused community.” They invited well-wishes in the form of charitable contributions to animal shelters or local food banks in her memory.

The announcement followed reports that Keaton’s health had “declined very suddenly” in recent months, catching even close friends by surprise. Her final days were spent privately, with family shielding news of her illness from the public.

Keaton’s storied career spanned more than five decades. She collaborated frequently with Woody Allen and earned the Oscar for Best Actress in 1977 for Annie Hall. Her filmography also includes The Godfather series, Something’s Gotta Give, The First Wives Club, and Book Club, among many others.

Keaton never married. She once said, “I’m the only woman of my generation to remain single all my life.” She had high–profile relationships over the years with Woody Allen, Warren Beatty, and Al Pacino.

She is survived by her two adopted children, Dexter and Duke. Her legacy as a distinctive voice in film, fashion, and feminism remains enduring.
