Honda Confirms 0 α Compact EV Won’t Launch in U.S., Europe or Australia

Gateway model to its new 0-Series lineup will focus on Japan and India markets when it goes on sale in 2027
The newly unveiled Honda 0 α (Alpha) electric SUV will not be offered in key Western markets such as the United States, Europe or Australia, according to official company statements.

Instead, Honda said the model will be manufactured in India and initially launched in Japan and India from 2027.

Honda Motor Company confirmed at the 2025 Japan Mobility Show that the 0 α is being developed as a “gateway model” within the new Honda 0 Series of electric vehicles, and that the production version will be built in India for export markets primarily in Asia.

At the world premiere, the automaker stated that right- and left-hand drive variants will be made, but that Western markets are not part of the current rollout plan.

Chief Engineer Toshikazu Hirose told reporters the 0 α will be produced at Honda’s only India car plant in Tapukara, Rajasthan, and no additional production sites have been announced.

When asked specifically about Australia and New Zealand, Hirose explained these markets were excluded because consumer preference in those regions tends toward larger vehicle models.

While the U.S. and Europe will not receive the 0 α, Honda reaffirmed its commitment in those markets through larger upcoming electric models such as the 0 Saloon and 0 SUV, which are scheduled to launch in 2026 and be built at Honda EV Hub in Ohio for the U.S. and imported to Europe.

This demonstrates Honda’s differentiated regional strategy.

The 0 α is engineered on an all-new EV-only platform and adheres to Honda’s “Thin, Light and Wise” development philosophy.

The compact SUV segment for which it is designed places it near the size of the previous HR-V (Vezel) at around 4.3 metres in length and 1.8 metres wide.

Initial materials describe it as a key market entry product for India and Japan, rather than global distribution in its current form.
