Jetstar Flights Resume Normal Operations After GPS Glitch

An unexplained fault in GPS systems caused delays and cancellations for several Jetstar flights last week, but operations have returned to normal.
Jetstar has resumed normal flight operations following disruptions caused by a mysterious glitch in its global positioning system (GPS) last week.

The airline confirmed that it had experienced delays and cancellations of flights after GPS faults were detected on Airbus A320 Neos and A321 Neos, affecting travel between Australia and Bali as well as delays for other flights to Fiji and Hobart.

The Civil Aviation Safety Authority (CASA) reported that the exact cause of the GPS issues remains undetermined.

CASA stated it is collaborating with Jetstar to understand the nature of the problem, while emphasizing that navigation systems and safety protocols were not compromised during these occurrences.

Jetstar disclosed that the issues stemmed from fault messages related to the Automatic Dependent Surveillance–Broadcast (ADS-B) system, which necessitated a reset before takeoff.

On Thursday, Jetstar indicated that a satellite signal issue from May 21 to May 23 AEST triggered the fault messages, leading to various flight disruptions.

Currently, Jetstar has noted that this fault is not recurring and is actively monitoring the situation.

The GPS system relies on signals from multiple satellites to determine an aircraft's location, and Jetstar acknowledged that signals from these satellites were generating erroneous fault messages on board.

Airbus confirmed that the malfunction was due to a satellite signal issue and explained that aircraft are equipped with various GPS units, inertial reference systems, and radio navigation aids for redundancy.

The aircraft manufacturer stated it is standard procedure to check and reset the GPS system if an anomaly is detected on the ground before subsequent flights.

Industry experts remain perplexed about how a satellite-related change could result in faults with the ADS-B system.

One official indicated that a software update for a satellite might have caused the issue, which was apparently rolled back without further incidents.

Data from Jetstar suggested that the satellite was positioned above Australia during specific hours, contributing to the disruptions.

Throughout the incident, regulatory authorities affirmed that Jetstar adhered to approved safety procedures, ensuring that safety was upheld.

Additionally, no other Qantas-owned aircraft were impacted by the GPS faults.

Reports emerged that other airlines, including WestJet, faced similar GPS disruption challenges, though they did not experience operational impacts.

Meanwhile, Virgin Australia confirmed it had encountered no comparable issues with its fleet.

Jetstar's performance statistics indicated that it canceled a lower percentage of flights compared to its domestic competitors during March, with a cancellation rate of 5.1 percent, slightly better than Qantas and Virgin Australia.

The airline's on-time performance for March was reported at 80.9 percent, positioning it second among domestic carriers, just behind Virgin Australia at 81.2 percent.
