Australia has confirmed it is deploying military assets to the Middle East as tensions between Iran and its regional adversaries intensify, with Prime Minister Anthony Albanese announcing the move as part of efforts to protect Australians and support Gulf partners under attack.

Speaking in Canberra, Albanese said the Australian Defence Force would deploy an advanced E-seven A Wedgetail surveillance aircraft along with eighty-five personnel to the United Arab Emirates for an initial four-week mission.

The aircraft will provide long-range airborne surveillance and command-and-control capabilities designed to help secure regional airspace and detect potential missile or drone threats.

The deployment follows requests from Gulf partners and comes as multiple countries across the region have faced waves of drone and rocket attacks linked to the widening confrontation involving Iran.

Australian officials stressed that the mission is defensive in nature and intended to assist partners with airspace monitoring and protection of civilian infrastructure rather than direct combat operations.

In addition to the surveillance aircraft, Australia is also providing advanced air-to-air missiles to help strengthen air defence capabilities in the United Arab Emirates.

Defence officials say the support will contribute to collective self-defence efforts by countries in the Gulf as they respond to the escalating threat environment.

The government has repeatedly emphasised that Australia is not deploying ground troops to Iran and does not intend to take part in offensive operations.

Instead, the deployment is framed as a limited contribution focused on intelligence, monitoring and defensive support.

Military planning has also included contingency preparations to assist Australian nationals in the region if conditions deteriorate further.

Officials say more than one hundred thousand Australians were in the broader Middle East at the onset of the crisis, prompting governments across the world to position aircraft and crisis response teams in case evacuations become necessary.

The E-seven A Wedgetail, often described as a flying command centre, is equipped with advanced radar capable of tracking aircraft, missiles and other threats across vast distances while coordinating allied responses in real time.

Its deployment places Australia among a group of countries contributing defensive capabilities as the conflict continues to widen.

As the crisis unfolds, Canberra says its priority remains the safety of Australians overseas and the stability of international air and maritime routes that are critical to global trade and energy supplies.
