Australia’s Treasurer has warned that households should prepare for rising living costs as surging global oil prices feed through to fuel, transport and everyday expenses.

Jim Chalmers said the escalating conflict in the Middle East is creating significant economic uncertainty and is already pushing up energy prices, with the potential to place renewed pressure on household budgets across the country.

He cautioned that developments in global oil markets could worsen existing cost-of-living challenges for Australian families.

Oil prices have climbed sharply amid fears that fighting in the region could disrupt supplies and shipping routes, particularly through strategic energy corridors used by global exporters.

The rise in crude prices is flowing through to petrol costs, which in some parts of Australia have already climbed above two dollars per litre.

Because Australia imports more than ninety per cent of the fuel it consumes, fluctuations in international oil markets can quickly affect domestic prices.

Petrol, diesel and jet fuel costs are closely linked to global crude prices and are also influenced by the value of the Australian dollar.

Treasury analysis suggests the surge in oil prices could lift inflation significantly if elevated prices persist.

Modelling indicates that if crude oil averages around one hundred US dollars per barrel for several months, headline inflation in Australia could rise by around half a percentage point in the coming quarter.

Economists warn that the effects are likely to spread well beyond fuel bills.

Higher transport and energy costs typically increase the price of goods and services across the economy, affecting groceries, construction materials and other essentials.

Analysts say this could reinforce inflationary pressure and complicate efforts by the Reserve Bank of Australia to stabilise prices.

Chalmers said the government is closely monitoring global markets and the evolving geopolitical situation.

He noted that while Australia’s economic outlook remains resilient, the conflict represents a new external shock that could influence both inflation and economic growth.

The treasurer also signalled that the uncertainty will be taken into account in the federal budget scheduled for May, as policymakers weigh how best to manage cost-of-living pressures while maintaining fiscal stability.

Despite the warnings, officials say Australia has adequate fuel supplies and there is no need for consumers to panic buy.

Authorities have also asked the national consumer watchdog to monitor fuel retailers closely to ensure motorists are not exposed to unjustified price increases as global market movements flow through to the pump.
