Australia has deployed a sophisticated early-warning surveillance aircraft to the Middle East as hostilities involving Iran intensify, with the mission aimed at strengthening air defences and helping protect civilians and allied nations in the region.

The Australian government confirmed that a Boeing E-7A Wedgetail aircraft from the Royal Australian Air Force has been sent to the Gulf along with approximately eighty-five defence personnel.

The deployment follows requests from regional partners seeking assistance in countering missile and drone attacks linked to the escalating conflict.

The aircraft will operate from the United Arab Emirates for an initial four-week period, providing long-range airborne surveillance capable of detecting and tracking aerial threats across large areas of airspace.

Equipped with advanced radar and communications systems, the Wedgetail can identify incoming drones, missiles, and aircraft and relay real-time information to air-defence systems and allied forces.

Australian officials described the mission as strictly defensive, emphasising that the aircraft will focus on early warning, reconnaissance, and coordination rather than direct combat operations.

The deployment is intended to help Gulf nations respond more quickly to aerial threats and to contribute to broader regional stability as tensions rise.

The decision comes amid a sharp escalation of violence in the Middle East following a series of strikes involving Iran and counter-operations by the United States and Israel.

Missile and drone attacks have targeted infrastructure and urban areas across the Gulf, prompting airspace disruptions and heightened security measures throughout the region.

Authorities in Canberra also confirmed that Australia will supply advanced AIM-120 air-to-air missiles to help replenish the defensive capabilities of the United Arab Emirates.

The weapons are designed to intercept hostile aircraft and drones and are expected to strengthen the country’s ability to respond to continuing aerial threats.

Government leaders noted that the deployment also reflects the need to safeguard Australian citizens in the region.

Tens of thousands of Australians live or work across the Gulf states, including a large community in the United Arab Emirates, making the stability of regional airspace a significant concern.

The E-7A Wedgetail, often described as a flying command centre, is among Australia’s most advanced military platforms.

Built on a modified Boeing seven-three-seven airframe, it carries a powerful electronically scanned radar capable of providing near-continuous surveillance over hundreds of kilometres.

Defence planners say the aircraft’s ability to coordinate air operations and share data with multiple partners makes it particularly valuable during periods of heightened tension, when early detection of missile launches or drone swarms can significantly improve response times.

Australia has stressed that its involvement is limited to defensive support and protection of civilians and allies, while continuing diplomatic efforts aimed at preventing further escalation of the conflict.
