Three Australian Defence Force personnel were confirmed to have been aboard a United States attack submarine that sank the Iranian warship IRIS Dena, an event that reportedly killed at least eighty-seven sailors.

The Australians were participating as part of the training arrangements connected to the AUKUS security partnership, a trilateral defence framework linking Australia, the United States and the United Kingdom.

Australian authorities stated that the personnel were present in a training capacity and did not take part in offensive operations.

The incident has intensified a long-running national debate about the consequences of Australia’s increasingly close military alignment with Washington.
