Energy officials say the country currently holds roughly thirty-six days of petrol, thirty-four days of diesel and thirty-two days of jet fuel based on typical consumption rates.

Those figures represent the highest stock levels recorded in about fifteen years, according to government briefings, and are designed to provide a buffer against sudden international supply shocks.

The reassurance comes as the conflict involving Iran has intensified concerns about the security of global oil transport, particularly around the Strait of Hormuz, one of the world’s most strategically important shipping corridors.

About one-fifth of global oil flows through the narrow waterway, making any disruption there a major factor for energy markets worldwide.

Australian authorities say motorists should avoid panic buying, warning that sudden surges in demand could create artificial shortages even when supplies remain adequate.

Officials have stressed that domestic fuel companies continue to receive shipments under existing contracts and that supply chains remain operational.

Australia relies heavily on imported fuel, with roughly ninety percent of its refined petroleum products coming from overseas refineries, primarily in Asia.

Tankers from countries such as Singapore, South Korea and Japan supply the bulk of petrol, diesel and aviation fuel used across the country.

To strengthen resilience, the government introduced a national minimum stockholding obligation in recent years requiring refiners and importers to maintain a set level of fuel reserves within Australia.

These regulations mandate that companies hold stock equivalent to several weeks of normal demand and report those levels regularly to federal authorities.

The system is intended to provide a strategic buffer while allowing time for global supply chains to adjust during crises.

However, analysts note that Australia’s reserves remain well below the ninety-day emergency stock benchmark recommended by the International Energy Agency for major oil-importing countries.

For most realistic disruptions, authorities say the current reserves provide a meaningful cushion.

A total shutdown of global supply to Australia is considered highly unlikely, and fuel shipments already en route to the country would extend available supply beyond the headline reserve figures.

Economists and energy specialists warn that while the country is unlikely to face an immediate shortage, prolonged conflict affecting shipping routes or refinery output could push prices higher and increase pressure on the nation’s energy security.

For now, government officials maintain that the system is functioning as designed and that Australians can continue normal fuel use without fear of imminent shortages.
