KPMG has selected Gary Wingrove, the firm’s current global chief operating officer and former leader of its Australian business, to become the next global chief executive of the international accounting and consulting network.

The decision follows a competitive leadership contest within the organization, with Wingrove emerging as the preferred candidate over KPMG UK chief Jon Holt.

The firm’s global board recommended Wingrove after internal deliberations and a confidential vote among senior leadership, with the appointment expected to be formally approved by the broader global council of member firms later this month.

Wingrove is due to succeed Bill Thomas, who has served as KPMG’s global chair and chief executive and is scheduled to step down at the end of September.

The leadership transition comes at a time when the accounting industry faces rapid technological change, evolving regulatory scrutiny and intensifying competition among the world’s largest professional services networks.

With more than two decades of experience within KPMG, Wingrove has played a central role in shaping the firm’s global strategy.

Since joining the international leadership team as chief operating officer in early twenty twenty two, he has overseen operational integration across the network and guided major investments in digital capabilities, artificial intelligence and global service delivery.

Earlier in his career, Wingrove spent eight years as chief executive of KPMG Australia, where he led the firm through a period of significant expansion.

During his tenure, the Australian practice nearly doubled its revenue, profits and workforce, strengthening its position within the global network.

KPMG operates differently from a conventional multinational corporation.

Rather than a single global entity, it functions as a federation of locally owned partnerships across more than one hundred forty countries and territories.

These member firms share branding, technology and professional standards while maintaining independent ownership structures.

As the incoming global chief executive, Wingrove is expected to continue efforts to integrate the network more closely and streamline operations across its many national partnerships.

Recent strategic initiatives have included encouraging mergers between country practices and consolidating regional structures in order to improve scale and consistency of service.

The firm employs approximately two hundred seventy six thousand people worldwide and generates around forty billion dollars in annual revenue, placing it among the largest professional services organizations globally alongside Deloitte, EY and PwC.

Wingrove’s leadership will focus on strengthening the firm’s global collaboration while navigating a rapidly changing consulting and auditing landscape.

Jon Holt is expected to remain in his role as chief executive of KPMG’s United Kingdom practice, which employs roughly sixteen thousand staff, ensuring continuity within one of the firm’s largest national businesses.
