AirAsia Expands Australian Network with New Bali Route as Darwin Services Suspended

Low-cost carrier adds Melbourne and Adelaide capacity and increases peak frequencies nationwide while withdrawing from Darwin due to weak demand
AirAsia is significantly expanding its Australian footprint in 2026, unveiling new routes and additional frequencies across major cities while confirming it will suspend services to Darwin, citing insufficient passenger demand.

The largest addition is a new Melbourne–Denpasar service launching on March 21, 2026, which the airline says will inject approximately 130,000 additional seats annually into the Australia–Bali market.

On the same date, Adelaide’s Bali service will increase from four to seven weekly flights, rising to as many as 10 weekly during peak travel periods.

The expanded Adelaide schedule will add more than 56,000 seats per year, reinforcing Bali’s position as a key leisure destination for South Australian travellers.

AirAsia is also strengthening its Kuala Lumpur links.

Both Sydney and Melbourne now operate daily services to the Malaysian capital, with aircraft offering premium cabin and flatbed seating options for passengers seeking additional comfort on long-haul low-cost routes.

Perth remains the carrier’s most heavily served Australian gateway.

The airline will maintain four daily Bali flights year-round from Western Australia, alongside double daily Kuala Lumpur services that increase to three daily during peak seasons.

Taken together, the network adjustments mean AirAsia plans to operate up to 100 weekly frequencies across its four principal Australian gateways during peak periods in 2026, up from 69 in 2025. The airline already carries close to one million passengers annually between Australia and Asia and is positioning itself to capture sustained outbound leisure demand.

Passengers connecting beyond Bali or Kuala Lumpur can access AirAsia’s Fly-Thru service, which enables onward connections to more than 150 destinations without requiring baggage re-collection.

From Kuala Lumpur, long-haul options include London Heathrow, Istanbul and Tashkent, extending the reach of the airline’s low-cost model into Europe and Central Asia.

In contrast to the expansion in larger cities, AirAsia confirmed it will suspend flights between Darwin and both Kuala Lumpur and Bali from April 28, 2026. The routes, operated by AirAsia Malaysia and Indonesia AirAsia, have been in place for roughly a year but did not achieve commercially sustainable passenger numbers.

The airline said affected customers will be contacted directly and refunds processed within 14 days.

It also acknowledged the support of Darwin Airport and Northern Territory tourism authorities, indicating it may revisit the market should demand conditions strengthen.

The decision underscores AirAsia’s stated strategy of concentrating capacity in markets demonstrating robust demand while withdrawing from routes that fail to meet performance thresholds, reflecting a disciplined approach to growth in the competitive Australia–Asia travel corridor.
