ExxonMobil is preparing to send its first-ever gasoline shipment from the United States Gulf Coast to Australia, marking a rare trans-Pacific fuel movement prompted by tightening global supply conditions.

Industry sources say the shipment will involve at least three hundred thousand barrels of gasoline departing from the Gulf Coast refining hub, a region that plays a central role in global petroleum exports.

The cargo represents a significant logistical shift, as fuel supplies for Australia are typically sourced from Asian refineries rather than from North America.

The shipment comes at a time when global fuel markets are under pressure due to disruptions linked to conflict in the Middle East, which has complicated shipping routes and strained export flows from key refining centres.

As a result, suppliers and traders have been forced to seek alternative sources of gasoline and other refined products to meet regional demand.

According to industry reports, two shipments scheduled this month could together total around six hundred thousand barrels of fuel products, mostly gasoline but also including other refined fuels.

Transport costs for the long-distance route are estimated at roughly six million dollars, equivalent to about twenty dollars per barrel, highlighting the unusually high cost of moving fuel across such distances.

The shift reflects growing volatility in global fuel logistics, particularly in Asia-Pacific markets that depend heavily on maritime supply chains.

Disruptions affecting tanker traffic in the Strait of Hormuz, one of the world’s most critical oil transit corridors, have contributed to tighter fuel availability and rising shipping risks for Asian refiners and traders.

ExxonMobil operates several fuel import terminals in Australia and has historically sourced product from nearby Asian refineries.

However, current market conditions have reduced the availability of exports from those facilities, forcing companies to explore more distant supply options.

Analysts note that while shipments from the U.S. Gulf Coast to Australia remain unusual and costly, the move underscores the flexibility of global fuel markets during periods of supply disruption.

Such long-distance trades are generally considered temporary responses to short-term imbalances rather than a permanent shift in supply patterns.
