Australia’s foreign minister has declined to confirm whether any Australian sailors were aboard a United States submarine that sank an Iranian warship in the Indian Ocean, as questions mount over Canberra’s potential involvement in the widening conflict.

Foreign Minister Penny Wong said the government would not disclose the location or operational details of Australian defence personnel when pressed in parliament about reports that Australians may have been serving on the submarine during the strike.

She stated that it is standard practice for security reasons not to reveal specific information about the deployment of Australian service members overseas.

The comments came after the United States confirmed that one of its submarines had torpedoed and sunk the Iranian warship Iris Dena near Sri Lanka’s southern coast, an attack that resulted in significant loss of life among the vessel’s crew.

The strike marked a dramatic escalation in the broader confrontation involving Iran and Western military forces.

Speculation about Australian involvement has intensified because of the close military cooperation between Australia and the United States under the AUKUS defence partnership.

The arrangement includes placing Australian naval personnel aboard American nuclear-powered submarines to gain operational experience as Australia prepares to acquire similar vessels in the future.

Defence analysts say that under these arrangements it is plausible that Australian submariners could be serving on U.S. attack submarines during patrols or operations.

Senior Australian naval leaders have previously indicated that Australian personnel were expected to rotate through U.S. submarine crews as part of training and integration programs.

When questioned directly about the possibility that Australians were involved in the attack, Wong reiterated that submarine operations remain the responsibility of the United States and that the Australian government does not comment on the specific activities or locations of personnel deployed with allied forces.

The government has also maintained that Australia did not participate in the broader U.S.-Israeli military operation targeting Iranian assets, while continuing to emphasize the importance of diplomatic efforts to reduce tensions in the region.

The episode has triggered debate within Australia about transparency and the implications of deeper defence integration with allied forces.

Some political figures have called for greater clarity about whether Australian personnel could become involved in military actions conducted by partner countries.

Officials, however, have stressed that the long-standing policy of protecting operational details is essential for the safety of service members and the effectiveness of allied defence cooperation.
