In discussions with Cricket Australia’s chair of selectors, George Bailey, Maxwell acknowledged the need for planning for future tournaments and suggested that it was time for new talent to step into his position.
Maxwell articulated his commitment to not holding onto his position for selfish reasons, emphasizing the importance of providing opportunities for emerging players while ensuring the team continues to prepare effectively for upcoming competitions, including the 2027 ODI World Cup.
Cricket Australia chief Todd Greenberg praised Maxwell’s impact on the sport, describing him as “one of the most exciting and influential” players in ODI cricket history.
Greenberg highlighted Maxwell’s explosive batting style, which has captivated audiences and inspired a new generation of cricketers.
He noted that Maxwell's contributions were vital in securing Australia’s triumph in the 2023 World Cup.
Bailey also acknowledged Maxwell's remarkable natural talent and energy, underscoring his commitment to representing Australia and his significant role in two World Cup victories.
