A fifteen-year-old boy in Sydney has managed to pass Snapchat’s visual age-verification tool despite being below the legal minimum age Australia is preparing to enforce.

The incident has heightened scrutiny of the systems designed to uphold the country’s new requirement that all social-media users be at least sixteen years old once the law takes full effect on December ten.

The boy, identified only as Charlie, had previously entered his real birthdate when opening the account.

Ahead of the national rollout of the youth access ban, Snapchat asked him to complete a selfie-based verification process operated by the third-party provider k-ID. The system accepted him as older than sixteen after a single photo, clearing him without further checks.

Charlie said he was surprised at how easily he passed.

Snapchat acknowledged the difficulty of ensuring perfect accuracy, noting that systems based on facial recognition remain vulnerable to misclassification.

The company added that stronger protections could come from deeper integration at device, operating-system or app-store level, where identity tools are often more secure.

Parents will also be able to flag suspected underage accounts.

Under the Online Safety Amendment Act governing the ban, platforms must take what regulators define as reasonable steps to prevent users under sixteen from creating or keeping accounts.

Firms that fail to meet this standard could face penalties reaching tens of millions of dollars.

Technology specialists, however, warn that age checks based on biometrics or uploaded identification can be unreliable or intrusive, and may not fully prevent minors from using older relatives’ devices or adopting alternative profiles.

The boy’s successful evasion underscores the challenge of enforcing the new rules as the deadline approaches.

While the law places responsibility on platforms rather than on young users, its effectiveness now depends on whether companies can refine their systems quickly enough to prevent widespread workarounds once enforcement begins.
