Pre-season testing in Barcelona and Bahrain revealed persistent reliability failures and an alarming lack of pace from the Honda RA626H hybrid engine that powers the AMR26, leaving the Silverstone squad’s ambitions for a strong start to the 2026 Formula One season in jeopardy.

Tests were plagued by severe vibration problems in the power unit’s battery system, forcing curtailment of running and limiting both Fernando Alonso and Lance Stroll to markedly fewer laps than rivals, undermining vital development work and data collection ahead of the first race of the year.

Honda itself has publicly acknowledged the “extremely challenging” situation and is working intensively with Aston Martin engineers to address the defects, but at this stage full resolution before the Australian Grand Prix appears unlikely.

The accrued shortfall of mileage and energy recovery performance has left Aston Martin trailing well behind other teams, with severe questions over whether the car can complete race distances or even qualify within necessary thresholds, a scenario that would represent a dramatic underperformance given the pre-season expectations that accompanied Adrian Newey’s arrival and the works engine deal.

In response to the crisis, Honda Racing Corporation president Koji Watanabe confirmed emergency talks are ongoing with Aston Martin, stressing a determination to find solutions despite the obstacles.

With the homologation deadline having passed, the team’s immediate target has shifted to simply finishing the season opener reliably rather than contesting for points, and the outcome in Melbourne will provide a first major indicator of how this troubled partnership will cope under competitive pressure.
