Australia has made clear that it will not take a direct military role in the escalating conflict involving Iran, reaffirming its position amidst intensifying regional hostilities following strikes by the United States and Israel.

Foreign Minister Penny Wong emphasised that Canberra did not participate in the joint U.S.–Israeli operation that killed Iran’s Supreme Leader, underscoring the government’s commitment to diplomacy and restraint in the face of rising tensions.

The Albanese administration has backed allied efforts to curb Iran’s missile and nuclear ambitions while stressing that Australian defence personnel are not being deployed to combat operations in the region and that there are no plans to commit troops to future actions.

Instead, Australia’s focus remains on supporting international efforts to de-escalate hostilities, protect civilians and pursue diplomatic solutions that can secure long-term regional stability.

Canberra has urged Australians in the Middle East to leave if it is safe to do so and has reiterated travel warnings for parts of the region amid concerns about reprisals and airspace closures.

Prime Minister Anthony Albanese and other senior officials have underscored the need for de-escalation and dialogue, positioning Australia as a constructive partner in international efforts to manage the crisis without becoming militarily engaged.

This stance aligns with Australia’s broader foreign policy approach of prioritising diplomatic engagement, collective security frameworks and nuanced support for allies while carefully avoiding entanglement in direct combat operations.
