Australia has shut several diplomatic missions in the Middle East and relocated personnel as officials warn that the regional conflict involving Iran could intensify in the coming days.

The move comes amid rapidly escalating hostilities following military strikes by the United States and Israel on Iranian targets, and retaliatory actions across the region that have raised fears of a widening war.

Australian authorities say the deteriorating security environment has forced them to scale back their diplomatic presence in parts of the Middle East while focusing resources on assisting citizens seeking to leave.

The government confirmed that its embassy in Israel and consular offices in Abu Dhabi and Dubai have been closed temporarily due to security concerns.

Diplomatic staff and their families have been relocated while emergency teams continue working to support Australians still in the region.

Officials have urged Australian citizens to depart the Middle East while commercial travel options remain available, warning that the situation could deteriorate quickly if hostilities expand further.

The government estimates that around one hundred and fifteen thousand Australians were in the region when the conflict intensified.

Foreign Minister Penny Wong said the overwhelming majority of Australians who had been stranded in transit hubs or affected by flight disruptions have now managed to leave after limited airspace reopenings allowed commercial services to resume.

More than three thousand people have returned to Australia on twenty-one flights so far.

Air travel across the Middle East has been heavily disrupted by missile attacks, airspace closures, and security alerts affecting major transit hubs such as Dubai, Doha, and Abu Dhabi.

Some airports remain partially operational, while others across the region have temporarily halted civilian flights.

The crisis follows a broader military escalation in which Iranian forces have launched attacks on shipping routes and regional infrastructure, while the United States and Israel have carried out extensive strikes against Iranian military sites.

Governments across the world have issued travel warnings and begun evacuating citizens as tensions continue to rise.

Australia has also deployed crisis response teams to the region to assist consular operations and help coordinate evacuations.

Authorities say the teams are working alongside diplomatic staff and international partners to support Australians attempting to return home.

The government continues to stress that the situation remains highly volatile and has urged citizens still in the Middle East to monitor official travel advisories and depart as soon as it is safe and feasible to do so.
