Australia Deploys Wedgetail Surveillance Jet and AMRAAM Missiles to UAE as Gulf Tensions Escalate

Canberra sends advanced airborne radar aircraft, defence personnel and air-to-air missiles to support Gulf airspace protection amid widening conflict with Iran.
Australia has announced the deployment of a sophisticated airborne surveillance aircraft and air-to-air missiles to the United Arab Emirates as tensions intensify across the Gulf during the expanding conflict involving Iran.

Prime Minister Anthony Albanese confirmed that a Royal Australian Air Force E-7A Wedgetail aircraft and eighty-five Australian Defence Force personnel will be sent to the region for an initial four-week mission.

The deployment follows requests from Gulf partners seeking assistance in defending their airspace from drone and missile attacks linked to the escalating regional war.

The Wedgetail, often described as a “flying radar,” is a highly capable airborne early-warning and control platform derived from the Boeing seven-three-seven.

Equipped with powerful long-range radar and advanced communications systems, it can detect and track aircraft, missiles and maritime targets across vast distances while coordinating defensive responses among allied forces.

Australian officials stressed that the mission is strictly defensive.

The aircraft will provide surveillance and reconnaissance to help protect civilian populations and allied infrastructure in Gulf airspace, while supporting broader collective self-defence efforts among partner nations.

Alongside the aircraft deployment, Australia will supply advanced medium-range air-to-air missiles to the UAE.

These weapons, commonly known as Advanced Medium-Range Air-to-Air Missiles, or AMRAAMs, are designed to intercept hostile aircraft and drones at significant distances and form a key component of modern air defence systems.

The move comes as the Middle East conflict continues to expand following strikes involving the United States and Israel against Iranian military assets.

Several Gulf states have faced waves of drone and rocket attacks, placing pressure on regional air-defence networks and prompting requests for additional international support.

Australian leaders emphasized that the deployment does not involve ground combat troops and does not constitute offensive military action against Iran.

Instead, officials described the operation as a protective measure aimed at safeguarding Australians living in the Gulf as well as supporting regional stability.

More than one hundred fifteen thousand Australians reside across Gulf countries, including approximately twenty-four thousand in the UAE.

The government said ensuring their safety was a central consideration behind the decision to provide defensive assistance.

The Wedgetail has previously been deployed internationally in support of allied operations, including surveillance missions in Europe linked to the war in Ukraine.

Its advanced radar and battle-management capabilities allow it to function as an airborne command centre, coordinating multiple aircraft and defence systems simultaneously.

The latest mission marks Australia’s most significant military deployment to the Middle East in several years and reflects the country’s continuing cooperation with international partners as security conditions deteriorate across the region.
