Australia Joins Canada-Led G7 Critical Minerals Alliance to Strengthen Global Supply Chains

New agreements between Australia and Canada deepen cooperation on strategic resources as nations seek to diversify critical mineral production and reduce concentrated supply risks.
Australia has formally joined a Canada-led G7 critical minerals alliance following the signing of a series of new agreements between the two resource-rich nations, marking a significant step toward strengthening global supply chains for strategic materials.

The announcement came during Canadian Prime Minister Mark Carney’s address to Australia’s parliament at the end of a three-day visit, where he confirmed that the countries had concluded multiple accords aimed at expanding collaboration on the production, investment and strategic management of critical minerals.

The initiative is designed to diversify global supply networks and ensure stable access to materials essential for modern technology and defence industries.

The G7 Critical Minerals Production Alliance, launched under Canada’s leadership, brings together trusted partner nations with substantial mineral reserves.

Its goal is to coordinate production and investment to create more resilient supply chains from mining to processing and manufacturing.

Australia’s entry into the alliance reflects its growing strategic role in the global minerals market.

Together, Australia and Canada are among the world’s most significant producers of key resources, accounting for roughly one third of global lithium and uranium output and more than forty percent of global iron ore production.

These materials are critical for technologies ranging from semiconductors and electric vehicles to advanced defence systems and renewable energy infrastructure.

The new agreements also include closer alignment between Australia’s Critical Minerals Strategic Reserve and Canada’s own stockpiling and investment initiatives.

Australia has already committed one point two billion Australian dollars to build a national stockpile of essential materials, initially focusing on minerals such as antimony, gallium and rare earth elements.

Officials from both countries emphasized that producer cooperation is an effective way to address concentrated supply risks in global markets.

By coordinating policies, investments and standards, allied nations hope to accelerate development of new projects and strengthen secure supply chains for industries that rely heavily on critical minerals.

Beyond mining and resource security, the two governments also agreed to broaden collaboration in areas including defence and maritime security, trade, artificial intelligence and space technology.

The initiatives reflect a broader effort by both countries to deepen strategic ties and coordinate their roles in a rapidly evolving global economic and security environment.
