Australia’s policy toward the escalating confrontation with Iran has triggered an increasingly sharp domestic debate, with some commentators arguing that the government’s alignment with United States and Israeli actions risks undermining the international rules-based system.

The criticism follows a dramatic escalation in the Middle East conflict, including military strikes against Iran and the sinking of an Iranian warship by a U.S. submarine in the Indian Ocean.

Australian Prime Minister Anthony Albanese later confirmed that three Australian Defence Force personnel had been aboard the vessel as part of the AUKUS submarine training program, while stressing that they took no part in offensive operations and that Australia remained compliant with international law.

Canberra has consistently supported efforts to prevent Iran from acquiring nuclear weapons, describing the objective as vital for global stability and regional security.
