Three Australian naval personnel found themselves unexpectedly close to a widening Middle East conflict after being stationed aboard a United States submarine that sank an Iranian warship in the Indian Ocean, according to confirmation from Australia’s prime minister.

The vessel, an Iranian navy frigate identified as IRIS Dena, was struck by torpedoes fired from a U.S. nuclear-powered submarine near Sri Lanka while sailing in international waters.

The attack caused the ship to sink rapidly, with at least eighty-seven sailors reported dead and dozens more rescued during a subsequent search and rescue operation led by Sri Lankan authorities.

Australia’s prime minister acknowledged that three members of the Royal Australian Navy were on board the American submarine at the time of the strike.

He emphasized that the personnel were embedded with the U.S. Navy under long-standing training arrangements connected to the trilateral AUKUS security partnership between Australia, the United States and the United Kingdom.

The government stated clearly that the Australian personnel did not take part in the attack itself.

Officials said the submariners were present solely for training and operational familiarisation as part of preparations for Australia’s future fleet of nuclear-powered submarines.

The incident has nonetheless brought Australia into close proximity with the rapidly intensifying confrontation between Iran and a U.S.-Israel military coalition.

Naval and air operations have expanded across the region as Washington and its allies target Iranian military infrastructure and maritime assets.

The destruction of the Iranian frigate marked a significant naval moment in the conflict.

Military officials confirmed that the submarine launched heavy torpedoes that struck the vessel, which sank within minutes after the explosion.

The engagement is notable because submarine attacks on major surface warships have been rare in modern conflicts and are almost unprecedented in recent decades.

Under the AUKUS agreement, Australian sailors regularly train aboard American submarines to build expertise ahead of the country’s planned acquisition of nuclear-powered vessels.

Officials in Canberra stressed that such deployments are routine and are designed to strengthen interoperability with allied forces.

However, the presence of Australian personnel during a lethal combat engagement has triggered renewed debate at home about how closely the country could be drawn into conflicts involving its allies.

The prime minister said the government would not normally disclose such operational details, but chose to confirm the Australians’ presence because of the extraordinary circumstances and the heightened national security discussions surrounding the unfolding conflict.
