China has rejected Australia’s claims regarding a recent military aircraft encounter over the Yellow Sea, disputing Canberra’s assertion that Chinese forces conducted an unsafe maneuver near an Australian helicopter during a routine operation.

The incident occurred on March four when a Royal Australian Navy MH-sixty-R Seahawk helicopter operating from the frigate HMAS Toowoomba was carrying out surveillance activity over international waters.

The mission formed part of Operation Argos, Australia’s contribution to a multinational effort enforcing United Nations sanctions on North Korea.

Australian officials said the helicopter was approached by a Chinese People’s Liberation Army Navy aircraft which matched its altitude before closing to what was described as an unsafe distance.

According to the Australian Defence Department, the Chinese aircraft then moved ahead, accelerated and rolled toward the helicopter, forcing the Australian crew to take evasive action to maintain safe flight.

No injuries or damage were reported, but Canberra described the maneuver as unsafe and unprofessional and later lodged a diplomatic protest with Beijing.

China has firmly rejected that account, arguing that its forces acted in a legitimate and professional manner.

Chinese officials said the Australian aircraft had been conducting close reconnaissance activities and accused Canberra of misrepresenting the circumstances of the encounter.

Beijing maintained that its military response was appropriate and in line with established operational procedures.

The disagreement highlights continuing friction between the two countries over military activity in regional airspace and waters.

Australia maintains that its forces routinely operate in accordance with international law and exercise the right to freedom of navigation and overflight in international waters.

Officials in Canberra emphasized that the vessel and its helicopter were conducting lawful operations and that the safety of Australian Defence Force personnel remains the government’s highest priority.

The incident did not result in casualties or damage but has prompted renewed diplomatic exchanges between the two governments.

Military encounters between Australian and Chinese aircraft and vessels have occurred periodically in recent years as both countries operate in strategically sensitive maritime zones.

Analysts note that such interactions underscore broader geopolitical tensions in the Indo-Pacific, where surveillance missions, sanctions enforcement operations and competing security interests frequently bring military forces into close proximity.
